The Beginning
Firefly is set 500 years into the future. Earth as we know it is no more and is regarded more in legend as The Earth that Was. Earth's resources were completely depleted. Due to an expansion into the exploration of space the human race moved to other planets. Planets were made habitable by a process called terraforming. Giving the planet a solid ground and an atmosphere which could be breathable by humans. Mankind spread to all corners of the galaxy and as a way to govern all these humans The Alliance was created. An organisation which was there to unify all of mankind under one imperial government. However there was opposition to this, in the form of The Independents. A massive war broke out, however the Independents weren't successful and The Alliance one. The Alliance now control all the core planets in the various planetary systems. On the outskirts of these systems lie the less economically successful planets, however they are further away from the law, but they lack the basic amenities the core planets benefit from. Such as medicine, food and general well being.
Malcolm Reynolds fought in the war, against Unification. He fought for the Independents. In the Battle of Serenity, in Serenity Valley he thought he was near victory, however they were at a loss. Mal became disillusioned and decided it was best for him to stay away from the Feds and the law. He bought himself a Firefly class transport ship in order to ship cargo, take whatever jobs that he can and keep flying. Along with his first mate, Zoë, who also fought along side him in the war. He hired a mechanic and a pilot and a handyman and they were off. Doing what they can to keep flying and staying beneath the Alliance's radar for as long as they can.
