Serenity: An Introduction
Joss Whedon created a sci-fi TV show called Firefly back in 2002 which was aired on Fox TV. However, after getting treated badly by the network, with episodes aired out of order, the show was cancelled due to low ratings. It looked like this was the end of Firefly and the last we'd see of the universe which Joss gave to us. Though it wasn't the last Joss wanted us to hear or see about Firefly. He wanted to see if he could make something out of Firefly's demise.
The "browncoats" banded together. The term browncoats comes from a term used in Firefly; the apposing forces against the Independants, the side on which Malcolm Reynolds and his crew were righting on. The term "browncoats" became the collective term in which the fans of Firefly were called. They rallied together and took out a full page ad in the Hollywood Reporter to thank Joss Whedon for bringing Firefly to the masses.
Encouraged by this further Joss pushed on with trying to get something out of the ashes. In late 2003 it was announced that there would be a big screen version of Firefly, Serenity. A movie to "continue" the Firefly-verse. In 2004 filming began on the movie and it had been given a 2005 release. With the release of the Firefly boxset the Firefly fanbase continued to grow with more and more fans coming on board.
On September 30th 2005 Serenity was released.
Firefly was a sci-fi show, with a small twist, that twist being cowboys. It was a mix of genres, the sci-fi genre and the western genre. It was about the crew of a small rag tag crew onboard a small cargo ship called Serenity. There's Malcolm Reynolds, the captain of the ship. He fought during the war of Independance, but was on the losing side, the side against the Independants. Zoe Warren is Mal's second in command, and fought in the war with Mal. Jayne Cobb is a mercenery for hire type of person; the muscle of the ship. Wash is the ship's pilot; one of the most skilled and talented pilots in the air. They also have a Companion onboard called Inara Serra, who rents one of the shuttles and brings a higher class to the ship. Then there's the mysterious Shepherd Book; a Shepherd who seems to have other connections. And finally there's Simon and River Tam, sublings who came aboard Serenity running from the Alliance. Together they crew Serenity, getting what jobs that they can to keep flying.
